This workshop, co-sponsored by Faculty Affairs and the Office of Research in the UM Medical School, will be facilitated by Chris Black, M.L.S., Assistant Director for Research Services, Medical School Office of Research. It will take place on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. in Seminar Rooms A&B, Taubman BSRB (Biomedical Science Research Building). Registration and breakfast begin at 7:30 a.m.
This broad-overview workshop – open to faculty members only – will focus on developing a persuasive grant proposal (to either federal sponsors or foundations) that is responsive to the sponsor’s priorities. Topics will cover ways to prepare for a critical review, critical elements of a research plan, options for reusing a failed renewal or unsuccessful new proposal, and existing resources at the University of Michigan for research proposal development.
During the last 30 minutes of the presentation, a panel of successful researchers will discuss navigating the competitive grant landscape and the grant review process. Panelists include: Christin Carter-Su, Ph.D. (Molecular & Integrative Physiology, Michigan Diabetes Research and Training Center); James Ferrara, M.D., D.Sc. (Internal Medicine and Pediatrics & Communicable Diseases); and Benjamin Margolis, M.D. (Internal Medicine, Biological Chemistry).
