KEC Operating Room Fire Drill – Using realistic scenarios to practice response

Staff at the Kellogg Eye Center Operating Rooms (OR) and Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) recently participated in a fire drill focusing on surgical fire response.

ORs and PACUs throughout the health system routinely conduct fire drills but the practice of integrating surgical fire scenarios is relatively new. Safety Management staff worked closely with KEC educators to develop realistic scenarios involving common oxidizers, fuel and ignition sources in their environment.

During the drill, surgical teams in each operating room talked through scenarios, practiced activating the alarm, dialing 9-1-1, and evacuating mock patients to the PACU, which is the designated horizontal refuge site.

The concept of integrating realistic scenarios into drills throughout the Hospitals and Health Centers will continue. Engagement from leadership, clinical staff, and a variety of other departments are the key to its success!
