UMHS to revise policy on photographing patients – Brown bag session Feb. 21

The University of Michigan Health System will be revising its policy regarding photographing and recording patients starting March 1.

Here are highlights of what’s new:

  • Photographing or recording a patient for internal education purposes now requires written consent.
  • Photographs taken for clinical patient care purposes should be incorporated into the patient’s medical record. They can be emailed to with identifying information that includes the patient’s name, medical record number, date photograph was taken, subject matter and body part photographed (e.g. decubitus ulcer of coccyx) and faculty/attending physician’s number (optional).
  • Consent form for photographing or recording patients is now available. See the Compliance Office webpage for important details and frequently asked questions.
  • Bring your questions to a brown bag session on Tuesday, Feb. 21 from 12-1 p.m. in the MCHC Auditorium (MCHC, F2305).
